One of the advantages of our beaches is their location: they are very close to urban areas and can be reached by subway easily and quickly from downtown. Visiting them is a good plan before or after a tapas tour in Barcelona with CityTellers. Grab your towel, swimwear and sunscreen; this post is all about the best beaches in Barcelona Spain. It’s bathing time!

Our favourite beaches in Barcelona Spain

Thanks to a renovation plan in the late 20th century, due to the Olympic Games, Barcelona has improved  its beaches in the urban areas. All of them are clean and offer all the services beach-goers may need: restaurants, bars, games, nautic sports, baywatch and health services etc.

La Barceloneta Beach is probably the most popular and lively beach and is close to Barceloneta Metro Station. It’s a great place for locals and tourists to mingle and socialise.  La Barceloneta also has the advantage of being really close to the oldest part of the city, the Gothic Quarter, so having a swim there will be a refreshing end to your introductory tour to the city, the Gothic Quarter Tour.

Barcelona Best Beaches

On the other side of the Olympic Port, and at the foot of the Mapfre Tower skyscrapers, you will find Icaria Beach, which is a fantastic location to visit all year round. The nearest Metro Station is Ciudadela Vila Olimpica.

Those who don’t like the busier beaches can try Sant Adrià Beach, located near the end of Diagonal Avenue and The Forum, not far from Sant Adrià del Besos railway station. It doesn’t fall under the municipality of Barcelona but it’s really close. Sant Adrià Beach is picturesque and quieter too. We would also like to let our visitors know about Mar Bella, a nudist beach near the quarter of Poblenou (Poble Nou Metro Station), as either a warning or a welcome piece of information, depending on your preferences.

The list of beaches in Barcelona Spain is longer than this however and also includes Sant Sebastià, Somorrostro, Bogatell, Llevant…

And if you have time to go out of the city…

If you can spend a full or half day out of the city, we suggest you visit other villages and discover our amazing beaches around the Barcelona region. Sitges, just 30 minutes away by rail, is one of them, which is known internationally because it’s one of the most important gay destinations in Catalonia. A bit further along you will find Vilanova i la Geltru, a village which offers pretty beaches too, which are longer and wider than others.
Calella and Mataró are other choice destinations located in northern Barcelona. Beaches in northern Barcelona are perfect for children and families as most of their beaches are Blue Flag level. The beaches in Barcelona Spain stand out because they are clean and have a large range of services for those who love watersports and gastronomy. For those concerned about safety at the beach, the beaches in Barcelona are well cared for by the municipalities, some are fully FEE approved and have onsite rescue and medical services. So combine your CityTellers cultural trip with relaxing breaks at the many fun, romantic and safe Mediterranean Sea beaches in Barcelona Spain!
