The use of ceramic tiles is a central feature in Catalonian modernism. But, Antoni Gaudi, the most brilliant artist of this style, took it to the highest level. Thanks to our Gaudi tour, you will be able to discover the masterpieces of this genius and especially his amazing use of colorful ceramic tiles. In fact, his style has been given a specific name: the trencadís style.

What is the trencadís style?

Trencadís is a really special type of mosaic made of broken tile shards which is known worldwide thanks to Gaudi but used by other artists in Catalonian modernism. The small and irregular pieces used to cover a surface allows artists to create curved mosaics on concave and convex surfaces. The small tile pieces have a bright finish so the reflection of the sun’s rays creates a brilliant effect too.

The origins of this style aren’t 100% clear, but it is believed that one day, while visiting the workshop of a friend, Gaudí encouraged his friend to place the tiles he was using faster. Gaudi took a flower pot, he broke one tile and gave the pieces to his friend, saying “handfuls, otherwise we will never finish”. And that’s how, almost by accident, he began to use his unique mosaics.

You can also explore the Gaudí tiles, during the Sagrada Familia Tour you will discover the unfinished Catholic temple and see this kind of trencadís. Coming with CityTellers is a good idea especially because  we don’t have to wait, we will skip the queue.
