September is an exciting month in Barcelona. It is a perfect time for discovering the city through our introductory tour, the Gothic Quarter Tour tours, like the ones offered by CityTellers, as the weather isn’t as hot as July or August but it is still warm enough to relax afterwards with a swim in the beaches or a quiet walk in the garden and park areas. Read on if you want to discover things to do in Barcelona in September, especially if you like festivities and events.

La Mercé festivities: Much more than a tribute to the patroness

The Virgin of La Mercé is the patroness of the city and Barcelona inhabitants celebrate her on September 24th. The days before and after are also busy with concerts, processions, exhibitions, castellers demonstrations in Plaça Sant Jaume and the marathon on September 18th in which thousands participate, including some of the best runners in the country and in the world. The streets of downtown Barcelona are decorated with the special colours of the festival. Bars and restaurants offer the best of local and international cuisine and it is a good time to book a tapas tour. If you want to know more about these festivities, we will post detailed info as soon as the City Council publishes the official program.

Other boroughs with festivities: La Barceloneta

La Mercé is the main festivity held around the whole city but there are other boroughs that celebrate their specific festivities too. In La Barceloneta you can attend the Sant Miquel Party during the last week of September, right after La Mercé ends. Concerts, activities for kids and traditional demonstrations will delight you and before or after you can swim at La Barceloneta beach too! It’s also the perfect time to discover habanera, an important music style in this borough.

Diada Day: The Day of Catalunya

While La Mercé and La Barceloneta celebrations and events have a festive spirit, Diada Day (on September 11th) has a political and cultural background. It is the National Day of Catalonia, in which balconies and streets are filled with senyera and estelada flags and independentist groups march through the city centre to reclaim more autonomy from the central State and international institutions. Cultural events are also held and you can attend many concerts, exhibitions and events on this day too.
